Senior scientist in Bioprocess Engineering

Toulouse White Biotechnology (TWB) is a public-private partnership infrastructure serving as a center of excellence in the field of industrial biotechnology.
This sector involves the application of biotechnology to the industrial production of molecules for a wide range of applications, including energy, chemicals, materials, nutrition, cosmetics, flavors, and healthcare.
It is based on the use of microorganisms or their components (enzymes) in industrial processes.

Position Context

Supported by a consortium of 45 partners (including 34 industrial partners), TWB uses its technological platforms to accelerate product development for private companies.
In partnership with leading public laboratories, TWB leverages its expertise and cutting-edge capabilities to develop biotechnological processes.
Its activities range from catalyst development (enzymes and microorganisms) to the establishment of pre-industrial processes.
The senior scientist will benefit from an exceptional ecosystem rich in diverse expertise.

In this context, TWB is involved in projects with academic and industrial partners focused on genetic and metabolic engineering of various microorganisms (bacteria, yeasts, fungi, etc.).
The senior scientist will be part of the Operations Directorate, which brings together all R&D teams involved in the execution of scientific and technological projects, and will report to the TWB Scientific Directorate.

Job Description

The senior scientist will be responsible for leading European R&D project bioprocess engineering.
This scientific will design and conduct experiments, manage teams of technicians and engineers, and develop original and efficient engineering technologies.

This scientific will also bring his/her experimental expertise in the following areas:

• Data treatment & data reconciliation
• High-throughput culture
• Biostatistic and modelling
• Interface with the genetic engineering team and the Machine Learning team

Required Profile

Holding a PhD with solid experience in fermentation, biotechnology or bioprocess technology using microorganisms (bacteria, conventional and/or non-conventional yeasts).
You have experience with running fermentations in bioreactors in different mode (batch, fed-batch, chemostat) and good skills in data analysis and multisource data reconciliation.
Experiences and skills related to some of the following topics are desirable:
molecular biology techniques, genetic engineering, metabolic engineering, metabolism, biochemistry.

An excellent communicator with strong team spirit, you have demonstrated in the past your ability to manage a multidisciplinary team including bioprocess engineer.

Job Responsibilities:

• You will interact with various partners involved in collaborative, industrial, and academic projects (R&D and technological platforms).
• You will, train, and manage an R&D team based on the needs and scope of the projects you will coordinate.
• You will develop strategic and mitigation plans to execute projects with scientific excellence while meeting contractual commitments.
• You will supervise and carry out experiments in line with excellence criteria, ensuring impeccable scientific rigor, robust methodologies, and high-quality standards.
• You will ensure the achievement of agreed milestones, deadlines, and budgets.
• You will be responsible for preparing deliverables, technical reports, quantitative analyses, protocols, scientific presentations, and interactions with academic and/or private collaborators.
• You will organize and lead meetings (internal, external, and workshops).
• With the support of the Scientific Directorate, you will maximize the project’s outcomes through patents, publications, and conference presentations.

• PhD in biology with at least 5 years of experience in fermentation, biotechnology or bioprocess technology
• Strong knowledge of microbiology
• Proven experience in project management, with a demonstrated ability to execute projects with the necessary resources and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
• Proficiency in English (spoken and written)
• Biostatistics and data treatment skills would be appreciated
• Knowledge of genetics, and molecular biology would be an asset
• Previous experience in industrial or applied biotechnology would be a plus
